Lampshade Tips

A great lamp deserves a great shade, and here is a guide to looking after, renovating and re-shading your lamp base, wall lights and ceiling pendants.

  • When ordering a new shade for an existing fitting, check the gimble against the measurements in the Fixing section for compatibility.
  • Echoing the shape of the base with the shade tends to complement the fitting. Softer organic lamp bases tend to suit ovals and cylinders, whilst geometric bases tend to suit squares and rectangular shades.
  • Perspex or Silk Diffusers on ceiling shades allow the light source to be softened – this is also very successful on large shades used for floor lamps.
  • Baffles to the top of shades can hide the internal workings of the lamp holder and shield the view of the bulb from stairwells and balconies.
  • Use a silver capped bulb to reduce glare where the bulb is visible.
  • Use pleated silk to add warmth to a scheme.
  • Update existing lamp bases with a new style or colour of shade.
  • For a dramatic feel use a light block between the layers of the shade so that the light is thrown from the top and bottom rather than through the body of the shade.
  • Add a hint of colour to a room with a contrasting lining in your lamp shade.
  • Gold lining on a plain nickel or silver lamp base will reflect a warm light.
  • Use long flex lengths on small ceiling shades over tables, counters and bedsides.
